Dartford Garden Transformation

This Dartford garden had stopped being usable long before we arrived. Waist-high grass and brambles had taken the whole plot, the only hard standing was a patchwork of cracked concrete slabs disappearing under the weeds, and the timber shed had weathered to the point where it was pulling the look of the entire space down. The family were walking past it rather than into it.

The brief was not a tidy-up. They wanted the garden taken back to bare ground and rebuilt as a proper outdoor room: a large paved area that could take a table, a seating group and a hot tub, a clean patch of green for the children that would not turn to mud in a Kent winter, somewhere to plant, and light enough to use the space long after the sun has gone. Low maintenance was the one non-negotiable, because the reason the garden had been lost in the first place was that nobody had the weekends to keep on top of it.

We cleared the site completely. Overgrowth, roots, the failed concrete slabs and the old sub-base all came out and went off site, which is the only honest way to start a garden of this kind. Paving laid over ground that has not been dug out looks fine for a season and then tells you exactly what is underneath it.

With the plot back to bare earth we set out the new levels. The garden falls away from the house, so rather than fight it we designed in a change of level: an upper terrace at the far end, retained by a brick course and stepped down to the main lower terrace. That gave the hot tub a level, well-drained base of its own and broke a long, narrow plot into two spaces that each have a job.

Both terraces were built on compacted MOT type 1 and laid in grey riven Indian sandstone, full mortar bed rather than spot-bedded, with the falls run away from the house to current building regulations and the joints pointed in a flexible weed-resistant compound. The lawn area was excavated to depth, given its own compacted base and sharp sand screed, and finished in a premium high-density artificial grass, sand-dressed and pinned so the edges stay flat against the paving rather than lifting at the perimeter the way cheaper grass does.

Down one side we built a rendered raised planter, finished in white so the planting reads against it, filled with topsoil and drained through the base. The shed was re-clad in new treated timber boarding and given fresh guttering and a downpipe, which turns a structure that was the worst thing in the garden into a deliberate feature wall. New fence panels and posts went in where the old ones had failed.

The lighting was run in last but designed in from the start. Wall lights wash down the new shed cladding, and low-level recessed spots are set into the paving edge along the lawn and the planter, so at night the garden reads as shape and texture rather than a single flat floodlight. All cabling was run below the paving before it was laid, so nothing is surface-clipped and nothing had to be lifted afterwards.
